Yixin Liu Associate Professor of Finance travels to Greece

Thanks to the assistance of a CIE travel grant, I was able to visit Hellenic American Education Center in Greece in the fall of 2013. HAEC is a relatively young university that promotes college education in English. It features a very internationalized student body and faculty as well. During my visit, I got to interact with not only colleagues/students from Greece, but also those from other European countries. LiU har en tradition av att lärare framgångsrikt har sökt och även erhållit, resurser för pedagogiska utvecklingsprojekt på den tiden när sådana medel fördelades i konkurrens på nationell nivå av t.ex. Rådet för grundutbildning, NSHU etc. Sedan 2008, när NSHU lades ner, finns inget sådan nationellt organ utan varje lärosäte har i uppdrag att själva arbeta med sitt interna kvalitetsarbete när det gäller utbildning. Under 2010 utlyste CUL medel för att stimulera sådana utvecklingsprojekt vid LiU, och tio projekt beviljades medel. I denna rapport finns bidrag från Laura Alvarez et.al; Madelaine Johansson et.al och Gunnel Östlund som är resultat av denna satsning. Under samma tid utlystes pedagogiska utvecklingsmedel inom LiTH, och bidragen från Ingrid Andersson och Johan Hedbrant, Henrik Brandén, Johan Renner och Björn Oskarsson är resultat av denna satsning. Utöver dessa personer bidrar också ett antal lärare med arbeten som grundar sig på deras kunskaper och insikter från deltagande i högskolepedagogiska kurser, undervisning och arbete med studenter, t.ex. på biblioteket. Bidrag från Chun-Xia Du, Ann-Sofie Bergeling, Christina Brage et.al och Magnus Dahlstedt är exempel på detta. Bidragen är skrivna på både svenska och engelska och varje författare är ensam ansvarig för innehållet. Vid redigeringen av bidragen har en ambition varit att de skall kunna läsas av icke ämneskunniga personer, men ibland är det svårt att förklara det konkreta genomförandet av kurser utan att använda fackuttryck. Vad gäller sättet att skriva referenser så har riktlinjerna varit att detta skall göras konsekvent, utifrån ett givet system, inom respektive bidrag. Why hyperbolic theories of dissipation cannot be ignored: Comments on a paper by Kostadt and Liu

Contrary to what is asserted in a recent paper by Kostadt and Liu ("Causality and stability of the relativistic diffusion equation"), experiments can tell apart (and in fact do) hyperbolic theories from parabolic theories of dissipation. It is stressed that the existence of a non--negligible relaxation time does not imply for the system to be out of the hydrodynamic regime.Comment: 8 pages Latex, to appear in Phys.Rev.

Contract Rights Under the I-864 Affidavit of Support: Seventh Circuit\u27s Reasoning Binds Courts\u27 Hands in a Shifting Landscape for Public Charge Doctrine

(Excerpt) Courts are currently split on the issue of whether a mitigation of damages defense is available to sponsors to the Affidavit. Leading cases, including Liu, rely upon the unique nature of the form to assert that such defenses are precluded. This Note will argue that the I-864 should be treated under the same principles as a typical common-law contract. Part I of this Note will trace the history of the I-864 form, primarily focusing on the legislation and case law rendering the form an enforceable contract. Part II will discuss Liu v. Mund, focusing extensively on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit’s legal and policy arguments, and how other courts have responded in its wake. Subsequently, Part III will respond to the arguments in Liu, offering novel arguments. Finally, Part III will offer analysis of the Affidavit in light of recently proposed executive action, making this Note the first to tie these executive actions directly to parties’ contract rights. Ultimately, this Note argues that treating the I-864 form as a common-law contract is not only a proper reading of the authorizing statutes, but also that diverging from Liu will give courts flexibility to ensure just outcomes in litigation
